Excursion to Chichen Itza + Ek-Balam

Our Chichen Itza + Ek-Balam excursion is one of the best options if you are staying in the Riviera Maya such as Cancun, Playa del Carmen or Tulum, it's one of the most impressive combinations in the region.

Two of the most iconic archaeological sites in the Yucatán peninsula, visit a beautiful and authentic archaeological site, it's also an excellent option if you want to climb the pyramids it is called, Ek-Balam then the most famous of all Chichen Itza

Excursion to Chichen itza + ek-balamTo complete a magical day full of incredible sensations, we have to visit a beautiful cenote, and buffet lunch, included in the price.

Chichen Itza

The ruins are a must-see, for anyone visiting the Riviera Maya, it's a place full of magic that will leave you speechless. You'll go with many illusions, and the place will surprise you in every way, it will exceed any expectations you had.

HISTORY: Mayan city pure excellence and without equal, founded in the 9th century AD. and was abandoned for no reason in 1250 AD. When the Spanish arrived in Yucatán (1517), Chichen Itza had already been abandoned, it's a mystery why and where its inhabitants went. By then the famous calendar had already been created (more precise than ours) and the knowledge in astronomy, geometry and mathematics was incredible for that time (how they did it is still unknown). Chichen Itza was the only city that introduced the cult of the god Kukulcan (the feathered serpent). The main pyramid (pyramid of Kukulcan or El Castillo), is an architectural work full of mysteries, it's itself a calendar, its stairs and sides represent the number of days, weeks, months and years that we use today. A few meters from the pyramid is the sacred cenote, where they found many remains and jewels (it was used for religious ceremonies in honor of Chaac, god of rain).

This excursion is available only on tuesday & thursday from Playa del Carmen o Riviera Maya

Ek-Balam

Ek-Balam is a beautiful Mayan building, one of the few that can still be climbed and is not very crowded, take advantage now because it will not be like that forever.

Excursion to Chichen itza + ek-balamIts temple is incredibly tall, and the fact that you can still climb to the top makes it an amazing place.

It's not very well known, and not visited much because it was discovered just a few years ago, you will love the fact of being able to climb all the buildings in the place, if you love heights and beautiful views this is a place for you. Even if you are not very fond of heights, you will love exploring this magical place, you may want to refrain from climbing the main pyramid (do it anyway, you won't regret it)

To get here you have to take a short walk of 15 minutes from the parking lot, it is a path full of trees and shade that make it very pleasant. When you arrive at the entrance of the site you can buy water and soft drinks, there are also bathrooms available.

Several buildings can be explored before reaching the main pyramid. Climbing the pyramid may seem very easy from the bottom, but don't be fooled, the steps are quite high and steep. Something very good about this pyramid is that it has a place where you can rest half way up. Once you reach the top the view will blow you away, you can see all the nearby buildings from above.

You'll love visiting this wonderful place full of details, where you can still see the original colors on the walls that have not been bleached by the sun.

This place is a gem of archeology where we can find some of the best preserved stucco facades in Mesoamerica. The main pyramid is the tomb of who is believed to have been the king and founder Ukit Kan Le'k Tok 1200 years ago. The tomb was recently discovered, full of stucco details, it was also very carefully excavated at this site and stucco figures were found in almost perfect condition that were buried by the Mayans more than 1200 years ago.

Something really special about these ruins is that you can walk on them. This along with the fact that the tour will be guided by an expert, a certified guide, that will help immerse you in the history of the area. Some people consider it better than Chichen Itza because you can enjoy the pyramids without restrictions of any kind! It is totally worth it and you will have the most fun climbing the more than 100 steps to reach the top of the pyramid.

Ek Balam is hidden in the jungle with trees around it and you will feel that time has not passed. It should be noted that many people don't want it to become too popular as it's part of its beauty. It is a place that is overshadowed by the radiance of Chichen Itza, but believe me it's an equally interesting and iconic place and it's not well known yet. Hopefully it will have a restricted number of visitors to keep it in this condition for a long time to come.

If you decide to visit Ek Balam I recommend that you bring a hat because being on top of the buildings there will be nothing to cover you from the direct rays of the sun. You should bring comfortable shoes; I do NOT recommend water shoes or sandals. When going up or down the steps you should take your time, going diagonally, like in a zigzag, it helps a lot

Cenote

This stop is part of our excursion and will be a break after walking through the archaeological sites. It will be very refreshing to swim in the cenote after being in the sun most of the day. The water is cool, but once you are in the water and swimming around it, it's wonderful. There are lockers to keep your items secure, there is a place to rinse off and change clothes if you wish. Be careful when walking up the stone steps to the cenote because the steps can be slippery. The cenote will be one of the highlights of the tour!

Buffet lunch

After visiting Chichen Itza and Ek-Balam we'll take you to a nice place for lunch. If you normally don't enjoy a buffet, I must tell you that this one is very complete and varied. Traditional Mexican dancers will be a good compliment to your meal, as will the surroundings. This will be a good time to relax and recharge after the full day of visiting Chichen Itza + Ek-Balam.

Important: Drinks at the buffet are not included in the price of the tour

We have been doing this for years and we already know the fine points that we have to make clear before starting the excursion.

It's not intended to be a complete list of what's not included, the most important things that we have discovered based on trial and error and where misinterpretations can be made, so again this list is not complete since each person is different, but follow this simple rule. Itinerary

There are two very important things that we have to make clear.

  1. We reserve the right to modify the order we visit the places included in the tour, this is always done in order to preserve the integrity of the excursion. For example, if there are crowds in Chichen Itza we can do Ek-Balam first, so that way when we get to Chichen there are no longer so many people and it will be more pleasant for our guests. The order of the visit doesn't alter the result of the tour. We'll visit for the same amount of time, only in a different order.
  2. We'll try to comply with this itinerary, but sometimes things do not go as planned (flat tires, mechanical damage, accidents on the road, etc.), if necessary, we'll make the necessary adjustments in times to fulfill what was promised, do not worry it's very unlikely that will happen.

Our advisers advised us not to put the itinerary of the excursion as it would be counterproductive, however, one of the guiding principles of our company is the truth.

We'll never lie to you to make a sale; we have an ethic and we are professionals and passionate about our excursions. We'll always be truthful, one thing is the duration of the excursion, it's a long excursion which will take the whole day. Don't let that intimidate you, time flies by when you’re having fun and remember that we'll visit a new wonder of the modern world. How many times will you have the opportunity to do this on your vacation? Go ahead, you will not regret it.

  • Wait For Us In THE LOBBY OF YOUR HOTEL

In 90% of cases, we will pick you up from the lobby of your accommodation center, we have extensive experience and we'll always do it in an agile way.

  • Ek Balam means Black Jaguar in mayan language

It is a wonderful archaeological zone, it's located in the middle of the jungle, it's one of the best-preserved areas that you will visit. You can still climb to the top of its most important temple, it is worth going up, the view is incredible. It's another corner of our beautiful Mexico to learn more about the Mayan culture.

  • Delicious Lunch Buffet INCLUDED IN THE PRICE

Try the gastronomic delights of the region, Yucatan has one of the best cuisines in Mexico, we have a buffet lunch included in the price of the tour, however, drinks are not included and you have to pay in cash when you finish eating.

  • Beautiful Cenote WONDER OF NATURE

If you are in the Yucatan peninsula and don't visit a cenote, that is a big mistake. The cenotes in the vicinity of Chichen Itza are among the best in the world.

It's impressive to think that the cenote was created naturally, an incredible whim of nature! It's nice to travel back in time and believe that we are at the entrance to the underworld.

Very refreshing after the walk through Chichen Itza.

  • Arriving At CHICHEN ITZA

The jewel in the crown of the Riviera Maya, we'll be in Chichen Itza for approximately two hours, with a certified guide who is an expert in the Mayan civilization. They will be with you explaining the importance of the site.

You will also have free time to explore the area at your leisure, and to take photos.

  • Returning to your hotel IN THE RIVIERA MAYA

Wow, words cannot describe the accumulation of sensations experienced, in this part of the excursion, we'll have a well-deserved rest to think about the magical day, places full of energy in the Yucatan peninsula.

  • Arriving at your hotel

The arrival time at your hotel is between 08:30 and 09:30 pm

"Although Ek Balam is more impressive in an entirely different way, anyone interested in Mayan ruins really needs to see Chichen Itza to get a sense of the scope of Mayan genius, power and influence. Seeing all of Chichén Itzá (that is, the part that’s been excavated and opened to tourists) requires a few hours with a good guide (there are no posted signs that do it justice.)"

"Wonder of the world! Recommend a visit combined with visit to Ek Balam"

Lou

"I do not regret our trip to Chichen Itza it was a long day. However, we actually preferred the ruins of Ek Balam over Chichen Itza. We would recommend combining both into the 1 day tour as we did. We visited Ek Balam later in the day and it was very quiet, and we loved being able to get so up close and personal to the ruins here, touching the stones and clambering over many of the ruins. You can also climb up the main steps of the temple here. The location was right in the jungle, creating a much better / more authentic / more enjoyable atmosphere than Chichen Itza."
